They pounced on the officer, whom they accused of making away with the animal using police resources.
On Thursday, a boda boda rider who identified himself as Morgan said he spotted the police officer offloading the cow from a police vehicle and taking it to a stream and alerted villagers as the victim had raised the alarm about his stolen cow.
They found the officer cleaning the cow and the vehicle as it had defecated.
The mob pounced on him, but he was later rescued and taken to the police station.
Speaking to Wananchi Reporting, Eileen Burudi, a resident in Lumakanda village, said cases of cattle theft had become rampant in the area.
"Cases are reported but no action is taken," she said.
Officers from Lumakanda police station were yet to comment on the incident by the time of publication of the story.
